The Necessity of Bible Study in the Christian Journey

The word “Bible” is from the Hebrew word “BIBLOS” meaning books. Similarly, in the Greek language the word could mean scroll or parchment. By definition, the Bible is a collection of books and can also be referred to as scrolls or parchments. A book is meant to be read and studied and as a good learner to have a proper knowledge of a book, the book has to be studied in detail. A lawyer will study extensively the nature and purpose of law. The same applies to a medical doctor who has chosen to study medicine as well. A good student does not just occasionally glance through a book to excel. But a good student will study in order to have a good success. A proper and in-depth study of the book will give the reader the required detailed information about the book.

As Christians, our text book is the Holy Bible. Holy is from the Greek word “Hagios” which
means sacred, pure, or worthy. Therefore, it follows that if the Bible is a book then HOLY
BIBLE simply means sacred book or worthy book or pure book. This book is for our study. Let’s look at the origin of the word disciple it is from the Greek word “mathettes” which generally means one who engages in learning through instruction from another also called be “pupil”, “apprentice” if Christians are Disciples of Christ definitely they must be learners and as learners what is our text book the “HOLY BIBLE” that is why Paul told Timothy in the book of 2nd Timothy chapter 3 vs15 “and that from a childhood thou has known the holy scripture which is able to make you wise unto salvation”.

So as Christians, studying the holy bible is what makes you a Christian. Therefore, just as a
student, needs to study his or her school books, a Christian also needs to study the Bible without leaving any stone unturned. Your knowledge of the Holy Bible is what gives you insight into who God is; His nature and character. Every book has its central message. For instance, a chemistry text book is different from a biology text book. So the Holy Bible for a Christian has its own theme; the message of salvation. For a Christian to have a full knowledge of his/her own personal identity as a direct replica of God’s image he/she must know that a proper bible study is inevitable.

A proper study of the Word of God makes you have a full knowledge of who God is, and a sound knowledge of your reality as a believer. As explained by John in the book of John 1 vs1; The word of God is holy; The word of God is God himself; It reveals God to us.
No one has ever seen God. But he’s revealed through Jesus Christ, the only begotten of the
Father. How can you get this knowledge? Of course, through the study of the word.
“You search the scriptures for in them you think you have eternal life: they are they which testify of me” John 5:39.
