A Plus for You: Hand Crafts

As I was preparing the meat pie that I made for mother’s day, I remembered how knowing all these things has been of help to me in my marriage. By the grace of God, I know four major handcrafts, which if I didn’t know how to do them, we would have been paying heavily for them here. My husband and I went to a store one day to get some men’s suits, and after buying, we discovered that one of the trousers had not been hemmed so we asked if they could do it for us and they said we had to pay an extra $19 or thereabouts. I looked at my husband, and he looked at me; then, we told them not to worry and that we would figure it out ourselves. My sisters, if I hadn’t known how to sew, we would not have had any other option than to have it done there. Although the money may sound small, it is something they are supposed to charge us nothing for in the first place; since we bought the suits from them. That is one example out of many that God has helped me to solve through the little, little things I gave myself to learn and am still learning.

I must let you know, my sisters, that to keep healthy finances in marriage, a woman must be able to do different work to support the family. All the work that I have learnt has been a great blessing to me.

Dear sisters, having a degree upon degree is good, but in today’s world, that alone may not provide adequate solutions to your needs in the future. I want to encourage you not to rely on your certificate alone. Having other sources of income through handcraft will help you a lot in your marriage.

Many years ago, I decided to learn tailoring during all the unnecessary strikes that were just declared during the semester, and this has been of help to me in many ways. I learnt that there is a strike going on in all the government universities in Nigeria now; I want to implore as many of our sisters that are yet to decide on what to learn to please do so and as many that are already learning something not to give up but try to pay more attention to the details of the work. Please remember that anything that is worth doing at all is worth doing well.

May God reveal what you can learn and understand better for you if you are yet to know it in Jesus’ name. Amen.
